Art & Culture
Artists are attracted to West Dorset. Why? Maybe its the relaxed atmosphere, the great light quality, the quality organic produce. There’s just more time down here – the pace of life is a little slower and people take time to enjoy their surroundings.
There are hundereds of art and craft shops in the villages around Devon and Dorset – and at the Hotel we show local artists work, commission and rent free, so that our visitors can enjoy some of what the local art community has to offer.
Dorset arts week each September is a fantastic time to see a lot of local artists at work. Workshops and house and galleries open up to the public and a map around Dorset shows where each unit is for anyone to visit.
Those interested in all things Literary also have plenty to see in this area. In Lyme Regis you can see where scenes from John Fowles’ “A French Lieutenant’s woman” were filmed, the house where Jane Austin set Persuasion and the building where it is rumoured a 17yr old Beatrix Potter wrote “The tales of Little Pig Robinson”.
With a guide book many of these buildings are easy to spot, but for a more comprehensive experience, Literary Lyme runs guided walks and tours.
Bridport & Charmouth also hold Literary festivals
In addition there is always something interesting going on at the Marine Theatre Lyme Regis, Bridport Arts Centre & Electric Palace, Bridport
